On January 16, 2024, during the ongoing 2024 BYD Dream Day event, BYD released what it claimed to be the world's "unique" palm key. The palm key utilizes palm vein recognition technology.

According to official introductions, the user's palm has uniqueness, and the palm vein and subcutaneous vein capillaries cannot be forged, possessing high precision characteristics. In terms of detailed parameters, the recognition distance of the palm key is 8-20cm, supporting a 360° horizontal recognition rotation angle and a vertical recognition rotation angle not exceeding 15°. Officials stated that it can be used to drive even when both the phone and keys are forgotten.

It is understood that biometric technology is gradually becoming an important means of identity authentication. The unique vein pattern structure of the human body is formed by the age of 12 and remains unchanged throughout life. According to medical research, the vein structure of each person is different, and no two people have the same vein structure. If a person's vein distribution structure is collected in advance, the vein distribution can be obtained through an infrared imaging terminal, and personal identity recognition can be achieved by comparing it with the vein structure reserved in the database.

Biometric recognition is a technology that identifies individuals based on human physiological characteristics (such as face, fingerprints, iris, etc.) and behavioral characteristics (posture, movements, emotions, etc.). Currently, commonly used biometric recognition technologies mainly include facial recognition, fingerprint recognition, iris recognition, behavioral recognition, and gait recognition.

Unlike fingerprint recognition, veins are distributed under the skin, with a complex shape, and the hemoglobin in the fingers absorbs near-infrared light to form a vein image, which is not easily obtained in daily life, ensuring high security and accuracy. Additionally, factors such as dirt, moisture, wounds, and calluses on the hands do not affect vein recognition.

Market Size Continues to Grow

With the development of biometric and artificial intelligence technologies, the market size of biometric recognition is steadily increasing. According to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, the global biometric recognition technology market was approximately $20 billion in 2019.

Contactless recognition will be widely applied

In recent years, the biometric recognition industry has developed rapidly, with the industrial chain basically formed, and the market size growing rapidly. The outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 has prompted a continuous increase in demand for contactless biometric recognition in the market. With the continuous emergence and implementation of new technologies in the biometric recognition market, biometric recognition scenarios are becoming more diversified, and product services are developing towards customization. Multi-modal biometric recognition technology will be widely applied, enhancing system security. The integration of technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing with biometric recognition is leading the industry upgrade, further promoting digitalization and intelligent development.

Shanghai Information Security Industry Association President Tan Jianfeng introduced that the biggest commonality of biometric authentication is uniqueness. We all have unique features such as faces, fingerprints, and irises. It is precisely because of the uniqueness of biometric features that people consider biometric authentication to be secure, but precisely because of this, the risks are even greater. Tan Jianfeng pointed out that once the biometric database is breached and biometric data is stolen, it will never be possible to regenerate. It is precisely this irreversibility that makes biometric authentication technology unsuitable for use in the Internet environment. In some specific industries, such as the financially oriented sector with high technical security indexes, facial recognition can be considered as an auxiliary authentication method.

Zhao Bo, Director of the China Electronics Technology Standardization Research Institute, introduced that the institute has established a standardization technical committee for biometric recognition technology. It is currently conducting repeated tests on the standardization of biometric recognition technology and will focus on this work in the future.
